Chapter 4: The Reaper's Line of Sight

Heads of the Hewdraw is the third chapter in the main storyline of Kid Icarus: Uprising. It features the return of Hewdraw, who has grown two additional heads and a much larger body. This mission has Pit returning to Skyworld after Palutena tells him that it is being attacked by the Underworld Army, possibly in retaliation of the defeat of Dark Lord Gaol. The rest of the chapter features an unnamed town in the middle of a vast grassland that resides on the edge of a massive lake. This area also features a variety of strange enemies, such as Komayto and Specknose.

Air Battle

The first part of this mission has Pit flying through Skyworld and defeating numerous enemies that plague the area. Palutena states that the attacking force seems so large that it would be impossible to deal with all of them in the five minutes he has for flying. He suggests that the best way to deal with the army would be to attack the leading force, who Palutena reveals to be Hewdraw. The beast is now capable of flight and with two additional heads. As it turns out, however, the multiple heads prove to be more of a burden than anything else to Hewdraw, as they all begin to argue with each other when Pit prepares to attack.

Battle Part 1

Hewdraw1

Hewdraw with three heads.

Once their bickering ends, the first part of the battle against Hewdraw takes place. Hewdraw's three heads will each take turns attacking Pit during the battle.

Fireball: the Three-Headed Hewdraw will attempt to roast Pit by spewing fireballs at him, similar to Twinbellows.

Electrobolt: the Three-Headed Hewdraw will try to hit Pit using a lightning bolt.

Laser Beam: the Three-Headed Hewdraw will try to hit Pit using a laser beam.

Bite: one of the heads will try to bite Pit.

After causing enough damage to one of the heads, it will fall off, leaving the other two to attack. This process must be repeated with all three heads. If Pit takes too long defeating the third head, Palutena will step in and blast the third head and body with a powerful beam attack, which she dubs the "Sacred Goddess Glam Blaster." Pit must then proceed to finish off the other two heads, which are still alive and terrorizing a town below.

Land Battle

As Pit makes his way to ground level, he will bear witness to the destruction being caused by the remaining heads to the once peaceful town. Palutena takes him beyond the town's walls, where it is also being attacked by Underworld forces. Some new enemies will be encountered here, including Stackjaw and Mega Mussels. Pit will have to fight his way through the town, encountering one of the other Hewdraw heads in the process. At some point, Palutena will tell Pit to go to the center of the town, where she will use the "Monster Pheromones" to attract one of the Hewdraw heads, much to Pit's chagrin.

Battle Part 2

The second battle is the easiest and takes place in the center of the town. The Hewdraw head is very limited when it comes to attacks and will mostly bounce around trying to bite or crush Pit. After the second battle, Palutena will tell Pit that the third head is near the town's lake, attempting to revive its body. He will then have to make his way through a well to find a passage to the lake.

Intensity Gates

The first Intensity Gate is seen if Pit enters the court at the right after he lands. It requires 4.0 or higher.

The second Intensity Gate is seen after defeating the first Hewdraw head; if Pit goes to the left, there will be three snacks as well as an the gate. It requires a difficulty setting of 7.0 or higher.

Boss Battle

Hewdraw headPict

The final battle with the violet head.

The third Hewdraw head is encountered at the lake outside of town. It has used the healing waters to grow a whole new snake-like body to battle Pit with. Now more ferocious than ever before, Hewdraw intends to prove that its one head is better than three.

Battle Part 3

This is by far the toughest battle of the mission, and Hewdraw now resembles its classic form from the original Kid Icarus. Without its other heads to hold it back, Hewdraw is now much faster and attacks from the lake. It moves through the water and uses many of its previous attacks, along with a few new ones.

Scale Missile: Hewdraw will charge up and release energy in the form of various missiles shaped in scales. They move so fast that the only way to avoid taking damage is to dash.

Tail Whip: Hewdraw will dive underwater and proceed to use his long tail to hit Pit. This attack can only be avoided by dashing.

Flare: when Hewdraw dives underwater, two differently colored flares will appear—one orange and the other purple. Shooting the purple flare will cause it to split into three and move towards Pit, hurting him if it touches him. On the other hand, if the orange flare is shot, it will fall into the water. This can be used to your advantage to lure the Hewdraw out of the water by shooting the flare when Hewdraw's body is below the flare.

Scale Shot: while underwater, Hewdraw will release scales that will hit Pit. He has to dash to dodge these scales.

When Pit has successfully lured the Hewdraw out of the water, it will land on the ground platform where Pit is; Pit can either melee Hewdraw or shoot him. His weak spot is on the tip of his head. After a while, he will no longer be stunned and will return to the lake. This process has to be repeated in order to kill him.

Trivia

  • In terms of dialogue, this chapter will have three slightly different outcomes depending on the order that Pit defeats the Hewdraw heads in the first air battle.
    • The first defeated head will appear as the Hewdraw Reborn, leaving the second to be the Hewdraw head.
  • This chapter features the first air battle and land battle mini-boss.
  • When Palutena first mentions Hewdraw, Pit will reply, "You mean this?", with a picture of the original NES Hewdraw sprite appearing on the screen.
